heart-breaking loss for Shakhtar Donetsk
By: sasha | October 1st, 2008Shakhtar Donetsk suffered a heart-breaking 2-1 loss to Barcelona in the Champions League. Mircea Lucescu’s Shakhtar were playing brilliantly with Brandão having a career night and consistently creating scoring opportunities. Finally just before the break a deep ball by Vyacheslav Shevchuk was fielded by Ilsinho, who would not be denied and gave Shakhtar the 1-0 lead to the delight of the home fans.
Barcelona rallied and applied pressure right after the break but were unable to ‘keeper Andriy Pyatov. With thirty minutes left in the match the finest player in Football, Lionel Messi rose from the Barcelona’s bench and entered the match for Thierry Henry. The end to end play continued but without further scoring until three minutes left in the match when a seemingly harmless Bojan Krkić cross was bobbled by the Shakhtar ‘keeper and neatly struck to the back of the net by an opportunistic Lionel Messi. With stunned silence the match was now level but the Albicelestes leader was not complete as deep into added-time Xavi found him unmarked and he volleyed the ball into the net as Andriy Pyatov rushed forward.
A stunning loss for Shakhtar Donetsk that now has them sitting in second place of Group C, tied with Sporting.
